Unclaimed Funds

The City of Burnaby often holds funds that are intended to be refunded to customers / vendors at a future date. Such funds may be held with the City as means of a refundable deposit, or as the result of a refund or other account adjustment. On occasion it may not be possible to contact the original owner of the funds and as such monies are held with the City for an extended period of time.

With the exception of Engineering damage deposits, our unclaimed funds database identifies sums unclaimed up to December 31, 2016. Current data for Engineering damage deposits is limited to items submitted between the years of 1958 to 1999.

Please use this service to see if you have any funds held with the City of Burnaby.

Additional records will be added every 6 months to expand the database. If the time frame of your transaction is not listed, check back in 6 months.

Those eligible to use this service include:

  • the original owner of the funds (person who paid the invoice / charge)
  • an employee / representative of the company owning the funds
  • a person holding power of attorney for an estate to which the funds are owed
  • a person acting as an appointed / instructed representative of the fund owner

You can file a request on behalf of another person if you have the legal authority to do so (e.g. as a legal representative or heir to an estate). You will need to provide additional information to verify the identity of the person you are requesting funds for, such as Power of Attorney or Last Will and Testament.

You can file a request on behalf of a company if you are a legal representative. You will need to provide additional information, such as the incorporation number and legal documentation certifying you as the organization's representative.

Should you successfully identify funds held in our database that appear to belong to you, you'll need to fill out an initial online request form. Once submitted, we will attempt to answer your inquiry within 5-10 business days. Upon receipt of your submission, staff will request that you provide proof of payment to accompany the application in order to verify ownership prior to the funds release.
