Climate Leadership

We will continue to lead and support individual, community and industry climate action, while encouraging and enabling climate and energy policy changes

Burnaby's climate leadership is inspired by foundational policies and plans such as the Community and Energy Emissions Plan (CEEP), the Environmental Sustainability Strategy, our Green Building Policy.

Our efforts to reduce Burnaby’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are guided by the Climate Action Framework and the City Energy Strategy, which outline strategies for reaching the emission reduction targets committed to in Council’s 2019 Climate Emergency Declaration.

We’re advancing policies to maximize the energy efficiency of new buildings, divert waste from the landfill, expand Burnaby’s EV charging network and create more opportunities for active transportation—to name just a few. We’re collaborating in efforts such as the Urban Resilient Futures Initiative to find community-centred solutions to climate challenges. And we’re closely scrutinizing all City operations and adopting internal policies and strategies to move our fleet and facilities toward carbon neutrality.

Programs and projects

The City is pursuing technological and policy solutions to reduce emissions and increase resiliency in our own operations and working in partnership with the community and other levels government to encourage action by residents, business and industry.
