To ensure the success of the 2026 General Local Election, the City of Burnaby is hiring for a variety of election worker positions. If you're interested in working on General Voting Day (October 17) and during Advance Voting (October 3, 7, 10), please review the job descriptions below.
Things to know before you apply
- You do not need to live in Burnaby to apply, although preference will be given to Burnaby residents
- All applications must be submitted online and applicants are required to complete and pass an online test
- A resume is not required, but may be uploaded and will be considered an asset
- Due to the volume of applications, only successful candidates will be contacted. Please have voicemail activated.
All election workers will be scheduled to work on General Voting Day and may work during Advance Voting. Pay rates reflect Burnaby's living wage policy and are outlined in each job description.
Election worker requirements
- Legally able to work in Canada (you do not have to be a Canadian citizen)
- 16 years of age or older
- Must successfully complete specific training sessions in September 2026
- Attention to detail and strong customer service skills
- Computer knowledge
- Fluency in English required, other languages an asset
Job descriptions
Presiding Election Official (PEO)
Oversees all aspects of voting day at a voting location. This position is ideal for individuals with management and election experience who are confident decision-makers with strong problem-solving skills.
Alternate Presiding Election Official (APEO)
Supports the PEO by assisting with many voting day responsibilities and may take on delegated PEO authorities as needed. This is a great opportunity for past election workers who want to build their skills and gain more hands-on experience.
Election Official (EO)
Guide voters through each step of the voting process, including checking documentation, registering voters and issuing ballots. This position is ideal for people with excellent customer service skills who are comfortable using computers and enjoy working directly with the public.
Information Official (IO)
Are the first point of contact for people at the voting location—welcoming them inside, answering initial questions and directing flow. IOs also oversee the voting machines and help voters cast their ballots. This role is an excellent entry point to gain experience working in an election.
Important dates

Training requirements
All election workers must attend a minimum of one paid training session in September, depending on position. The City will offer multiple dates and times so that election workers can select the training session most convenient for them. Dates and times for the training sessions will be provided upon hire.
After you're hired
Once hired, election workers can sign into the election worker portal to access training documents and additional information.
On voting days, election workers are expected to report to their voting location at 7 am, with PEOs expected to start at 6:30 am. Shifts end after the voting location closes (Advance Voting) or once the final count is complete (General Voting Day).
