Professional artists have the opportunity to create in the tranquil and inspiring natural setting of Deer Lake Park in beautifully restored heritage homes, as part of the City of Burnaby’s Deer Lake Artist Residencies.
Artists from all disciplines are invited to apply for a residency online. Residencies may include short-term housing, studio use or production, and can be as short as 6 days or as long as 4 months.
“Located on the shared ancestral and unceded territories of the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ and Skwxwù7mesh speaking peoples, Deer Lake Park has long been regarded as the cultural hub of Burnaby, inspiring countless artists over the years,” said Mayor Mike Hurley. “These unique residencies are an investment in arts practice and creation that will enrich existing arts and cultural programming at the Burnaby Art Gallery, the Shadbolt Centre and throughout the community.”
The intention of these residencies is to provide time and space for professional artists, with emerging to established practices, to create new work. Flexible timeframes from six days to four months are available for artists stays by invitation or application.
Resident artists will work with the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts or the Burnaby Art Gallery to support artist-led community engagement projects relevant to each residency. Alongside the housing, resident artists will have access to rehearsal spaces and studios as well as other resources, to support their creative inquiry.
