Mayor Mike Hurley is encouraging the entire Burnaby community to come together and support hometown athlete Tyler Wotherspoon and the rest of Team Canada at the 2022 Beijing Games.
Wotherspoon is a defenceman for Canada’s men’s hockey team. The 28-year-old was drafted in the second round of the 2011 NHL entry draft, and currently plays for the Utica Comets in the AHL.
“It takes an incredible amount of determination and dedication to reach the Olympics and we couldn’t be more proud of Tyler for being named to the Canadian men’s hockey team,” said Mayor Mike Hurley. “We’ll be cheering loud for you and Team Canada to bring home the gold!”
Wotherspoon played junior hockey with the Portland Winterhawks, with whom he won a WHL Championship and earned a second team all-star selection in 2013. That season he also played for the WHL All-Stars in the Canada/Russia Super Series.
He spent the four seasons (2013-14 to 2016-17) with the Calgary Flames, split between the NHL and AHL. He appeared in 30 NHL games with the Flames.
The 2022 Beijing Games will take place from February 4 to February 20.
