City of Burnaby to add 50 new bus shelters in 2024

Last updated: February 20, 2024

The City of Burnaby installed 50 new bus shelters across Burnaby in 2023 and plans to install 50 more in 2024, making it safer and more comfortable for Burnaby residents taking transit.

“These upgrades to our bus shelters in Burnaby help to give people better choices for getting around our city, making transit a more attractive option,” said Mayor Mike Hurley. “Over time, small changes like this can make a big difference toward achieving our climate goals.”

The Bus Shelter Expansion Program launched in 2023, with the goal of adding 370 new shelters in Burnaby by 2030. These shelters feature universal accessibility elements, including lighting and location signage, as well as other accessibility features requested through the City of Burnaby’s Access Advisory Committee.

Space for future amenities such as garbage and recycling receptacles was also incorporated in the bus shelter design.

The City uses a variety of factors to prioritize the locations of the new shelters, including ridership and proximity to schools, seniors centres or civic facilities.

Adding new shelters and accessibility features to Burnaby’s transit network aligns with the City’s Climate Action Framework and Connecting Burnaby: Burnaby’s Transportation Plan
