Council approves contract to complete the Burnaby Lake Recreation Complex

Last updated: May 6, 2024

Burnaby City Council has approved a contract to complete the design and construction of the Burnaby Lake Recreation Complex (BLRC).

“The Burnaby Lake Recreation Complex will be an incredible facility, designed to host high-level competitions and be a hub for residents from across Burnaby to connect with their neighbours and be active,” said Mayor Mike Hurley. “This new facility will be a major anchor at Burnaby Lake and solidify this area as one of the premier sports complexes in BC.”

On December 11, 2023, the Council approved the staff-recommended design, which includes the following features:

  • 50 metre pool with 10 lanes
  • Diving tower and boards
  • Combined leisure and 6 lane 25 metre pool
  • NHL sized arena (ice/dry floor)
  • Combined surface and underground parking
  • At grade pedestrian crossing to connect to the Christine Sinclair Community Centre

The design aligns with the City’s vision of providing a destination recreation facility that not only attracts regional participation in leisure and competitive sports but also emphasizes inclusivity. By meeting diverse recreation needs, it ensures that both residents and visitors feel welcome.

The estimated cost of the project is $252.9 million, of which $12 million is GST. As a public service body, the City can recover the full amount of the GST paid.

Construction is expected to begin later this year.
