City of Burnaby supports local non-profits with grants

Last updated: June 20, 2024

More than $200,000 in funding and in-kind services provided to 26 organizations.

The City of Burnaby awarded $104,497 to 25 non-profit organizations that serve the Burnaby community through the new Community Grants policy.

The grants will help these organizations with their operating budgets and specific initiatives. City support for non-profit organizations also comes in terms of recreational sport grants (for team travel), in-kind services and subsidized use of City facilities.

“We’re extremely fortunate to live in a city with so many incredible community organizations,” said Mayor Mike Hurley. “The City is proud to offer support through grants and other programming to ensure these organizations continue to make Burnaby into a vibrant, exciting place to live.”

The Community Grants program is part of the City's commitment to support the social, cultural and recreational well-being of Burnaby residents. The program aims to foster community development, inclusion, diversity and civic engagement. The next intake for Community Grant applications is in the fall. The deadline for submissions is September 1, 2024. For more information on the Community Grants program and how to apply, please visit: Burnaby.ca/CommunityGrants.

In addition, the City Council has approved a 3-year Contribution Agreement with the Burnaby Neighbourhood House Society, a non-profit organization that provides programs and services to families, children, youth and seniors in Burnaby. The agreement will provide $100,000 in grant funding and up to $5,000 in in-kind services to the society each year for the term of the agreement. This will streamline the application process for the society and its affiliated non-profits and support their long-term sustainability and impact.

Grants also fund festivals and special events

The City also recently awarded $125,000 to 13 non-profit organizations through the Festival Burnaby Grants Program.

The funding will support 13 medium to large-sized festivals in 2024, including the Fiji Festival, the Canada Bubble Tea Festival, Hats Off Day and the 2024 Chinese Culture Heritage Festival & 16th Vancouver WaterSplashing Festival.

The City of Burnaby thanks all the non-profit organizations that contribute to the vitality and livability of our city. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with them.
