City breaks ground on new Burnaby RCMP detachment

Last updated: June 25, 2024

Mayor Mike Hurley and representatives from City Council and the Burnaby RCMP broke ground on the new RCMP detachment on June 25, marking a significant milestone in the construction of the new facility.

“This project fills an important role in ensuring the Burnaby RCMP can continue to deliver community safety services at the high level our residents have come to expect, now and as our city grows,” said Mayor Mike Hurley. “Our local police have long outgrown their existing space and we are moving quickly to build a facility that will support exceptional policing in our city.”

“We are thrilled to see this project moving forward and would like to extend our appreciation to Mayor and Council for their ongoing commitment to enhancing public safety in Burnaby. Having a new, purpose-built detachment will allow the Burnaby RCMP to better serve our community,” said Chief Superintendent Graham de la Gorgendiere, Officer in Charge of the Burnaby RCMP.

The new three-storey, 129,000-square-foot detachment will be built on City-owned land at the corner of Ledger Avenue and Norland Avenue, replacing the existing facility on Deer Lake Avenue which was built in 1967. Originally designed as a courthouse, the building was later transitioned to serve as the Burnaby RCMP detachment. A 2020 needs-assessment study identified the need to replace the detachment as it unable to accommodate all RCMP departmental requirements.
