Burnaby City Council has approved the contract award for the construction of a new community centre and library to replace the Cameron Community Centre and Library, marking the start of a major construction project in the city's northeast region. The project is a significant step towards enriching the local infrastructure and supporting the community's growing needs.
“We’re excited to be building a brand-new Cameron Community Centre and Library, which will be a modern and accessible space for everyone to enjoy,” said Mayor Mike Hurley. “This new facility will be a place for families to gather, learn, play and make memories that will last a lifetime.”
The new facility will become the civic heart of Lougheed Town Centre and will include:
- new library
- aquatic facility
- gymnasium featuring two full-sized basketball courts
- weight room and cardio facilities
- indoor running track
- fitness studios
- multipurpose rooms
- dedicated youth and seniors’ spaces
- child minding and indoor and outdoor play areas
- civic plaza
The community will still be able to gather and enjoy select recreational activities, social and learning programs at a temporary Cameron Community Centre and Library located on the first floor of The City of Lougheed Shopping Centre (9855 Austin Ave) during construction of the new facility.
Cameron Recreation Complex will close on Sunday, August 18 and re-open at the temporary location in The City of Lougheed Shopping Centre on Tuesday, September 3. Stay tuned for more details about our farewell event on Saturday, August 17.
The estimated total construction cost is $267 million, of which $13.35 million is GST. As a public service body, the City can recover the full amount of the GST paid.
