A number of Burnaby’s civic facilities will operate on altered schedules as the City observes National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30.
Please note the following changes:
- Burnaby Public Library branches will be closed on September 29 and 30.
- City Hall will be closed on Monday, October 2 (as the statutory holiday falls on a Saturday).
- Other civic facilities, including recreation centres, may have adjusted hours. Check Burnaby.ca/Centres for more information.
- Curbside collection for garbage and recycling will shift to the following day.
Since 2021, the Government of Canada has recognized the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation as a federal statutory holiday for federally regulated workers in the public and private sectors. On March 9, 2023, the Province of British Columbia also passed legislation to make September 30 a statutory holiday.
The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation honours the children who never returned home and survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities.
The City of Burnaby is committed to actively working with the four host Nations on whose unceded territory the City of Burnaby is located, including the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), and kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem) Peoples, as well as the urban Indigenous population who live in Burnaby, to advance reconciliation by building and maintaining positive relationships to meaningfully do this important work together – on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and all days.
