The atmospheric river that is bringing heavy rains to the entire Metro Vancouver region this weekend (October 19 and 20) is causing significant flooding in many low-lying areas of the City of Burnaby.
Conditions may be unsafe in affected areas due to water pooling on roads and swollen creeks and rivers. People travelling around the city should expect impacts to traffic and transit, and roads may be closed temporarily until conditions improve.
Members of the community should also avoid areas known to flood easily such as rivers, streams, low lying areas, drainage channels and ravines.
Residents are encouraged to check the curb gutters and catch basins on your street to ensure they are clear of leaves, garbage and other debris. Clear any debris frequently to prevent flooding and water pooling on roads.
The City has deployed extra staff to respond as quickly as possible to problem areas.
The City’s response includes:
- Setting up road closures and detours for areas affected by flooding.
- Sandbagging to protect sanitary sewer stations along the Still Creek corridor.
- Conducting flood patrols, checking creeks, road crossings and clearing catch basins of debris.
- Managing creeks that have overflowed, where possible, and addressing flooded roadways.
- Responding to reports of flooded basements, addressing blockages in City sewer systems, and assisting residents as much as resources allow.
You can report flooding and other safety hazards to our 24-hour service line at 604-294-7200.
