Burnaby raises living wage for staff and contractors

Last updated: December 20, 2024

The City of Burnaby remains dedicated to its commitment as a Living Wage employer.

Effective retroactively from December 2, the living wage has increased from $25.68 per hour to $27.05 (a 5.33% increase), reflecting the rising cost of living in the Metro Vancouver area. This adjustment applies to both City staff earning the living wage and contractors working with the City.

As a Living Wage employer, the City strives to ensure that all employees and contractors receive a wage that allows them to cover basic expenses such as food, rent, and other necessities, while also contributing to their communities within the Metro Vancouver region.

The Living Wage for Families Campaign (LFWC) determines the annual living wage by calculating the income needed for a family of four to cover living costs, including rent, groceries, healthcare, and savings for each adult. The City of Burnaby was certified as a Living Wage employer in 2020, joining a number of other BC businesses and municipalities who have committed to paying a Living Wage.
