Following discussions with the Burnaby School District, the City of Burnaby is considering the possibility of taking an active role in the management and operations of the Michael J. Fox Theatre, which is located on Burnaby South Secondary’s property.
Since it opened in 1993, the theatre has been operated by an independent, non-profit society. In recent months, management within the Michael J. Fox Theatre Society has changed, such that responsibility is now resting solely with the school district. The theatre is currently used for school and District events, as well as by the community at large. Recognizing the importance of the venue to the wider community, the school district and the City have been in talks about future operations.
“Michael J. Fox Theatre is one of the important places where our community comes to gather, connect and celebrate, and we want to understand what will be required to keep that going for the long term,” said Mayor Mike Hurley.
The City of Burnaby engaged an arts and culture consultant to conduct a preliminary feasibility study. It highlighted the theatre's significant role as a cultural hub and recommended that the City of Burnaby consider reviewing various operating models for the future of the theatre.
“We’re excited that the City of Burnaby is willing to collaborate with the Burnaby School District to explore possible ways to work together to maintain the community’s use of the theatre,” said Burnaby Board of Education Chair Kristin Schnider. “As a Board, we’re proud of the theatre’s long-standing contributions to the performing arts in Burnaby.”
Following the initial recommendations in the study, Burnaby City Council asked City staff to work closely with both staff at the school district and a consultant to undertake a more detailed and comprehensive analysis. This will include a facility assessment, equipment audit and a market analysis.
There are no plans to change how the theatre is operated while the comprehensive analysis is underway. The theatre remains open with a full slate of performances.
Once the analysis is completed, City staff will report back to City Council on the feasibility of the City’s involvement with the future of the theatre. Both the District and the City are committed to keeping the community informed.
