The City of Burnaby and Metro Vancouver have signed a 25-year lease agreement for Burnaby Lake Regional Park, securing the long-term management of one of the most popular regional destinations in Burnaby.

Under the agreement, Metro Vancouver will continue to fund day-to-day maintenance, natural resource protection, regulation and enforcement, and capital improvements related to the lands and programs within the 360-acre park, which it has done since 1978.

“Burnaby Lake Regional Park is one of the most important ecological and recreational destinations in all of Metro Vancouver,” said Mayor Mike Hurley. “We’re pleased to reaffirm our commitment to working with Metro Vancouver to protect and enhance this area for future generations to enjoy.”

As part of the agreement, Metro Vancouver will also continue to deliver nature-based interpretive programming and special events to the public and work with community organizations to encourage stewardship, volunteer opportunities and education in the park. Within the next five years, Metro Vancouver will develop a Park Management Plan with the City to serve as a roadmap for the park’s future.

“Staff at Metro Vancouver and the City of Burnaby have worked incredibly hard on this new lease agreement for Burnaby Lake Regional Park, and we are thrilled to continue caring for this popular park,” said John McEwen, Chair of Metro Vancouver’s Regional Parks Committee and Vice Chair of the Board. “We look forward to continuing to work with the city to protect and manage this area and connect the region’s residents with nature.”Metro Vancouver manages a regional parks system that encompasses more than 13,800 hectares, with 24 regional parks, five greenways, two ecological conservancy areas, and two regional park reserves in communities from Bowen Island in the west to Langley and Maple Ridge in the east.
