On February 25, 2025, Council accepted an annual report on the City’s HOME Strategy (adopted 2021), a 10-year plan of action designed to foster an inclusive, livable community with housing for a variety of incomes and needs. Highlights from the progress made in 2024 include:
- adopting the Province’s Small-Scale Multi-Unit Housing (SSMUH) regulations, making it easier to build a variety of new housing forms on residential lots.
- completing a two-year review of Burnaby’s Tenant Assistance Policy, a pioneering policy recognized as having some of the strongest tenant protections in Canada.
- implementing a wide range of development approval improvements designed to make it easier and faster for new housing to be built in Burnaby. Over the course of the year, these changes improved permit application wait times by up to 85% and garnered a NAIOP Most Improved Approval Timing award.
- Disbursing over $850,000 in housing grants and approving an additional $3,000,000 for future disbursement.
