Mayor Hurley’s statement on BC Budget

Last updated: March 6, 2025

The provincial government released its Budget 2025: Standing Strong for B.C. in the midst of uncertain economic times. We understand that the budget is a targeted response to the unpredictable tariffs and to mitigate further impacts to British Columbians.

Standing strong means standing together. Now is the time for all government levels to unite and deliver policies and actions that support the people we serve.

Costs are rising for Burnaby families and businesses – and we are committed doing our part to support the folks in need. At the same time, we need to continue to invest in supporting families, by creating child care spaces and more affordable housing. These are urgent issues which fall under provincial and federal jurisdiction – but municipal governments, including the City of Burnaby, have been largely responsible for addressing these priorities. For us to succeed moving forward, we need support from our partners at the federal and provincial levels.

Small and medium-sized businesses also need our support. We are pleased with the credit increase with the Film Incentive but we need to do more.  With more soundstages than anywhere else in B.C., Burnaby is proud to be the heart of Hollywood North. As we build to the future, it is essential that governments find ways to support the film industry, and ensure productions continue to come to B.C., creating well-paying jobs and stimulating our local economy.

We can appreciate that Budget 2025 reflects the uncertain economic reality we find ourselves in. But the plan is short on support for municipalities, short on support for small and medium-sized businesses and does not include any substantial sources of funding for housing programs or new child care facilities.

These deficiencies must be addressed.

As Mayor, I will continue to advocate to our provincial and federal representatives to fund essential programs to keep our communities moving forward.

Thank you.
