Artists wanted – help animate Burnaby’s public space

Last updated: March 10, 2025

City of Burnaby announces open call for new public art roster. The City of Burnaby is inviting artists to send in portfolios for the chance to contribute to public art projects. Selected artists may be invited to collaborate with City departments such as engineering, transportation and parks on small-scale public art projects until the end of 2027. Projects could include:

  • Murals or surface treatments on community buildings and play areas.
  • Street installations, including decorated planter boxes, traffic barriers or crosswalk designs.
  • Functional design elements like shade canopies, seating or artistic treatments for civic utilities.

This program opens the door for artists to respond to unique sites and contexts, while fostering new collaboration between artists and the City. The aim is to integrate creativity and innovation, animating civic infrastructure and making meaningful cultural additions to urban space.

Submission Details

We welcome submissions from emerging and established artists, including those new to public art. The submission must include a statement of interest, resume and portfolio. City staff and members of the Burnaby Art Gallery Public Art Advisory Committee will review applications. Selected artists will be placed on a shortlist until end of 2027, and artists will be contacted as opportunities arise. Being selected for the shortlist does not guarantee a project offer.

About Public Art

Art helps us tell the story of who we are, and who we want to be. Burnaby regularly commissions new artworks for public spaces to mark important milestones, gateways, places and passages. As part of an expansive and vibrant network of artistic expression, public art harnesses new ideas, generates discussion about the past, present, and future and translates experiences between residents. Burnaby’s public art program enhances the community by reflecting the myriad perspectives and traditions of those who visit and reside here.
