Burnaby releases annual report on solid waste and recycling

On March 31, Burnaby’s Environment Committee accepted an annual report on the City’s solid waste and recycling division. The report details the performance of Burnaby’s operations, and also documents the progress the City is making towards ambitious waste-reduction goals, like the Canada-Wide Action Plan on Zero Plastic Waste. Highlights from the 2024 report include:

  • accomplishing a new lowest-ever figure for single-family waste generation at 1,013 kg per household served 
  • debuting Burnaby’s first-ever Spring Clean Up Day event on June 8 2024, which drew 1,133 vehicles dropping off 60,625 kg of garbage and over 100 mattresses 
  • publishing data on construction and demolition waste for the first time, which shows that in 2024, 91% of recyclable material like clean wood, drywall and concrete from building demolitions was recycled
