Since 2021, the City and TransLink have worked together on a project to explore improvements to Hastings Street, between Boundary Road and Duthie Avenue. The goal of the Hastings Street Improvement Project was to find near-term opportunities for enhancing mobility for all users that could be implemented within 3 to 5 years.
Together, the City and TransLink completed a comprehensive technical evaluation of different options for improving bus service. After public feedback in 2022, additional feedback from council and the community, we have further reviewed the project scope, potential benefits, and trade-offs within the context of limited resources.
After this review, the decision was made not to proceed with this project. However, the City is working in collaboration with TransLink staff on a number of other projects that will improve walking, cycling, and transit in Burnaby.
TransLink has informed us that they remain committed to working closely with the City to advance significant transit projects in Burnaby, including the proposed Bus Rapid Transit connecting Metrotown to the North Shore, the Burnaby Mountain Gondola, and increased bus and SkyTrain services.
