About this project
We’re conducting a review of Swangard Stadium to inform a renewal for the facility and help identify a future vision. The review will also help explore potential opportunities and future projects in the short term and the next 20 years to guide reinvestment in the facility.
As part of the study, we gathered feedback from various Swangard Stadium user groups through a survey at the start of the year. To provide a roadmap for future projects that guide reinvestment in the facility, we asked user groups how they use the stadium, what the current issues and challenges are, and what they envision for future opportunities.
Background
Swangard Stadium officially opened in 1969 in Central Park and has hosted many community, cultural and sporting events and other functions over the years. The stadium is home to various large annual events, and with its natural grass turf, is a track and field destination for local schools and high-level soccer teams. The stadium serves the community as a securable venue with washroom facilities, food and liquor concessions and a covered area for inclement weather.
What’s happening now
Thank you to everyone who participated in the Swangard Stadium user group survey as part of the public engagement for the feasibility study.
We incorporated the feedback we received into a draft strategy report that was presented to the Parks, Recreation and Culture Commission on July 11 for feedback on the proposed options, including a recommendation to undertake broad public engagement to validate the needs of the community. The draft report and feedback from the Commission meeting will be presented to Council on August 28 to seek direction as we move forward on this exciting project. Read the July 11 report.
