We’re inviting the whole city to celebrate National Public Works Week with us at our new Laurel Street facility! Enjoy a day of free family fun and learning with us, and discover all the ways our team works to keep our city running to create a safe, connected, inclusive, healthy and dynamic community. Guests of all ages can experience music, food trucks and fun activities like kids construction play areas, a photo zone with lots of our heavy equipment, demonstrations in our welding and carpentry shops and much, much more.
- Enjoy a barbecue! Our Fire Department will be barbecuing by donation (while supplies last), with all proceeds going towards the Burnaby Firefighters Charitable Association.
- Grab an event passport at the gate and explore the yard to learn the secret passwords! Drop your completed passport with us to enter our general or kids’ prize draws.
- The event is designed to happen rain or shine.
How to get to the event
Take our complimentary shuttle service from 4244 Norland Avenue (curbside). Shuttle pick up and drop off is every 15 minutes (approximately). Free parking is available in the lot at 4276 Norland Avenue, first driveway north of Canada Way.
Take transit and visit Translink Trip Planner to find the nearest bus stop.
Cyclists and pedestrians please use the Godwin Avenue entrance north of Hardwick Street. A bike valet service is available.
Parking at the event site and in the area is limited. Look for visitor parking lots at 5780 Laurel Street and street parking along Laurel Street. Please note that Douglas Road is closed between Laurel Street and Hardwick Street due to Metro Vancouver roadwork. See maps below for more details.

Laurel Street Works Yard Grand Opening Passport Draw
- The Laurel Street Works Yard Grand Opening Celebration Passport Draw (the “Contest”) starts at 10:30 am Pacific Standard Time (PST) on Saturday, May 25, 2024 and closes on Saturday, May 25, 2024 at 2:30 pm PST (the “Contest Period”). No purchase necessary. Void where prohibited.
- The Contest sponsor is the City of Burnaby (hereinafter referred to as “the City”).
- To enter the Contest, participants must complete the entry form on the Laurel Street Works Yard Passport. The entrant is encouraged to have the event passport fully filled out, but it is not a requirement to have all the correct responses to enter the draw.
- Eligible entrants will be selected by random draw from the eligible entries received during the Contest period. The odds of winning depend on the number of eligible entries received. In the event that the potential winner cannot be contacted within three (3) business days after the applicable draw, he or she will be disqualified and an alternate potential winner may be drawn at the Contest Sponsor’s sole discretion. Proof of identification must be provided upon request.
- In order to be declared the winner, the potential winner will be required to sign and return within the time stipulated by the City, a full release and indemnity form, stating that, among other things, he/she has read, understood and complied with these Rules, grants all consents required, agrees to be available and to participate in publicity and/or promotion(s) related to the Contest and/or the City and/or similar matters, authorizes the City to broadcast, publish, disseminate and otherwise use his/her child’s first name and age photograph(s), and likeness in connection with any promotion and/or publicity, and/or for general news, entertainment and/or information purposes at no additional compensation to the potential winner, beyond the awarding of or participation in the Prize, accepts the Prize as offered and releases the City from any and all liability of any kind arising out of the potential winner’s participation in this Contest and receipt and use of the Prize. In the event that the potential winner does not comply with all the provisions as contemplated in these Rules, the City will have the right to disqualify the potential winner and draw an alternate potential winner, and the City will be fully and completely released and discharged from any liability or responsibility in this regard. The provisions and procedures referred to above relating to selection and notification of a potential winner will be applied with the necessary amendments, until a qualified winner has been duly selected, but in any event, no later than Friday, June 7, 2024.
- By entering this Contest, the entrants and participants automatically agree to accept and abide by these Rules and warrants that he or she created the entry and the entry does not infringe on any rights of a third party or violate any copyright. Failure to comply with these Rules may result in disqualification from this contest. All decisions of the City with respect to any aspect of this Contest, including without limitation the eligibility of entries, are final and binding on all entrants in all matters as they relate to this Contest.
- All entries become property of the City who assumes no responsibility for garbled, lost, late, delayed, destroyed or misdirected entries or any computer errors or malfunctions. The City does not assume any responsibility for incorrect or inaccurate capture of entry information, technical malfunctions, human or technical error, seeding or printing errors, lost, delayed or garbled data or transmissions, omissions, interruptions, deletions, defects or failures of any telephone or computer lines or networks, computer equipment, software or any combination thereof. Entry materials or data that have been tampered with or altered are void. If for any reason, in the opinion of the City, in its sole discretion, the Contest is not capable of running as originally planned , or if the administration, security, fairness, integrity or the proper conduct of the Contest is corrupted or adversely affected, including by reason of infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures or any other causes beyond its control, the City reserves its right to cancel, terminate, modify, amend, extend or suspend the Contest, and select a winner from previously received eligible entries. The City reserves its right to modify the Rules without materially affecting the terms and conditions hereof. The City reserves its right, in its sole discretion, to disqualify any individual it finds to be tampering with the entry process or the operation of the Contest or to be acting in violation of the Rules or otherwise in a disruptive manner.
- Contest is subject to all applicable federal, provincial and municipal laws and regulations. By entering this Contest, each entrant consents to the collection, use and distribution of his or her personal information (information that identifies an entrant as an individual, such as name, email, home telephone number, age and home address) by the City for the purposes of implementing, administering and fulfilling this Contest. The City will not sell or transmit this information to third parties except for the purposes of administering this Contest. Any inquiry concerning the personal information held by the City should be addressed to City of Burnaby Corporate Communications & Marketing Departments at Suite 205 - 4946 Canada Way, Burnaby, BC V5G 4H7. In the event of any discrepancy or inconsistency between the terms and conditions of the Rules and disclosures or other statements contained in any Contest-related materials including, but not limited to, the Contest entry form or point of sale, print or online advertising and promotions, the terms and conditions of the Rules shall prevail, govern and control.
- All intellectual property including, but not limited to, trademarks, trade names, logos, designs, promotional materials, web pages, source codes, drawings, illustrations, slogans and representations associated with the Contest are owned by the City. All rights are reserved. Unauthorized copying or use of any copyrighted material or intellectual property without the express written consent of its owner is strictly prohibited.
About the Laurel Street Works Yard
The new Laurel Street Works Yard is a new state-of-the-art facility which includes space for public works operations (road, water and drainage), central stores (warehousing for stock materials and parts), welding, paint and carpentry shops, fleet storage and repairs and offices (engineering and emergency operations centre). Laurel also contains our new emergency data centre, which ensures our team can respond to situations rapidly. Even during a major power failure, our Laurel facility can continue to operate- the facility contains two large backup generators to keep our operations up and running, even in the event of an outage.
