Learn how the City keeps its residents safe during snow
During snow and ice conditions, the City's Engineering and Parks Departments are prepared and ready to respond 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Our crews clear snow and ice using salt, brine solution, plows and abrasives to keep our community safe and healthy.
We clear the following routes in order of priority:
- main arterial streets such as Lougheed, Kingsway and Canada Way
- emergency response routes
- bus routes and collector streets
- streets bordering senior and long term care facilities
- local roads with slopes that have only 1 outlet and limited access
- local roads bordering elementary schools
Snow removal routes are established based on traffic volume, speed, road classification, road terrain, and accessibility by transit and emergency services.
Sidewalk clearing
We clear in the order of priority:
- bus stops and wheelchair ramps along arterial streets, then collector streets
- sidewalks adjacent to municipal facilities such as libraries and community centres
- pedestrian overpasses
City parks and facilities clearing
We clear snow and manage ice at major civic facilities to help ensure that community services remain open and safe. Facilities that receive snow and ice control include:
- civic buildings, such as City Hall complex and RCMP headquarters
- recreation facilities, such as Community centres and indoor pools, ice skating arenas and seniors' centres
- arts and cultural facilities and libraries
- City-owned restaurants
- urban trails and park sidewalks
Our crews are unable to clear snow and ice on unpaved trails and pathways, boardwalks, rubber tracks and surfaces, playgrounds, artificial fields, sports fields and sports courts. If you’re planning a visit to one of our parks or recreation facilities during icy conditions, be sure to dress for the weather and wear proper footwear.
