City improving development approval process

Last updated: March 13, 2023

The City of Burnaby is taking action to improve processing times for development and building permits and create a faster, simpler and better experience for applicants through the Development Approval Process (DAP) Project.

In the coming months, we will be redesigning processes and implementing pilot programs designed to make the process more consistent and predictable for all applicants. The project also aims to make the application process more transparent and easier with step-by-step guidelines outlining exactly what information is needed and when. Throughout the project, we will be seeking feedback from applicants about their experience with the development approval process to ensure we’re meeting applicants’ needs.

Development approvals create opportunities for new homes and businesses within the region, helping to enhance the quality of life for Burnaby’s residents, businesses and visitors. There are over 11,000 residential units currently under construction in Burnaby with another 45,000 units in various stages of development approval, and millions of square feet of job space are being created through development approvals. As the number and complexity of applications increase, the DAP Project seeks to make the process faster, simpler, better.

We look forward to sharing more updates about the DAP Project. Visit Burnaby.ca/DAP for more information as it becomes available.
